David Waker, a recent graduate from the Dance: Urban Practice Course at the University of East London presents a five-minute solo: Rising Pheasant, presenting itself as an intense insight into martial arts and dance being one and the same, a hybrid of many different styles of movement presented on stage. David’s Martial Dance Theatre creates a choking atmosphere that captures the audiences’ attention as soon as the piece begins. David’s theatrical presence stings with a veil of pressure like no other, as he brings Eastern practice training to the forefront of Western theatre. Taking inspiration from Sidi Larbi’s Sutra, David brings a distinct third space into the two-dimensional theatrical box, with the aid of popular Urban genres including B-boying and Contemporary. The audience will be drawn into David’s third space and be inspired by the organic, animalistic singularity of Rising Pheasant.
