Rising Pheasant
David Waker, a recent graduate from the Dance: Urban Practice Course at the University of East London presents a five-minute solo: Rising Pheasant, presenting itself as an intense insight into martial arts and dance being one and the same, a hybrid of many different styles of movement presented on stage. David’s Martial Dance Theatre creates a choking atmosphere that captures the audiences’ attention as soon as the piece begins. David’s theatrical presence stings with a veil of pressure like no other, as he brings Eastern practice training to the forefront of Western theatre. Taking inspiration from Sidi Larbi’s Sutra, David brings a distinct third space into the two-dimensional theatrical box, with the aid of popular Urban genres including B-boying and Contemporary. The audience will be drawn into David’s third space and be inspired by the organic, animalistic singularity of Rising Pheasant. The audience will feel anxiety, breathlessness, and transfixed to learn from Rising Pheasant’s solid, groundness, and how the audience can bring forward their own hybrid creativity towards their own chosen practice to create such fierce and engaging focus.
